"Who are you shooting for?"
"Oh, are you photographing this event, too?"

It is one of my biggest pet peeves. Those outside of the photographic world probably don't have any clue, but nightlife photography is as bad as Animal Planet. They try to take a territorial piss wherever they go. It's just unhealthy.

Photographers feel threatened by photographers as though there is some sort of competition. In reality, they asked you and I to show up for one reason: they want as many pictures as they can possibly get so they can make their event look like it kicked ass. They are going to use EVERYTHING you post, and EVERYTHING I post. Maybe you'll have better exposure than me in some of yours, and perhaps I'll capture some one at a better moment than you did.
It isn't a competition. It's a team effort.
